Welcome to the Mountain Biking Capital of the North Island! If you’re planning to experience the fun of mountain biking at Skyline Rotorua, you’re in for an unforgettable ride. To ensure you make the most of your time on Rotorua’s world-class trails, we’ve put together five top tips for out-of-town riders looking to ride at Skyline.

1. Plan Ahead: Trail Selection and Ticketing

Skyline Rotorua offers a variety of trails catering to different skill levels. Before you hit the trails, take some time to research and plan your ride. The park has everything from beginner-friendly tracks to advanced downhill descents, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Check the trail map when you get there to see what is open, understand the difficulty ratings, and choose routes that match your skill level and preferences.

TOP TIP: Don’t forget to purchase your tickets in advance to save time and avoid disappointment. Skyline Rotorua is a popular destination, and there can be a queue at ticketing on busy days.

2. Talk to the Patrollers to see What’s Running Mint!

When you get there, keep your eye out for the bike patrol. They are super helpful and will let you know the current conditions or if there are any new features since your last visit if you are returning. Their phone number is on your wristband that has your uplifts loaded onto it for emergencies.

The patrollers double as trail crew, so they will be out there tickling up the trails at Skyline to keep them running mint!

3. Timing Is Key: Weather and Crowd Considerations

Rotorua’s weather can be unpredictable, so keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your visit. While the trails are open in various weather conditions, being prepared for rain or mud can enhance your overall experience. Pack appropriate clothing and gear for changing weather conditions. If it is too wet, they will close the park. Whakarewarewa Forest (a.k.a The Redwoods) will still be open, but ride carefully and if you notice that you are causing any damage to the trails to the ride, maybe cut your ride short. The majority of these trails are maintained by volunteers.

Consider visiting the park during weekdays or during off-peak hours to avoid crowds. This not only ensures a more enjoyable ride but also allows you to take full advantage of the trails without waiting in line.

4. Skill Building: Take Advantage of Lessons

Whether you’re a beginner looking to build confidence or an experienced rider aiming to refine your skills, we offer lessons at Skyline Rotorua tailored to different levels. Professional instructors can provide valuable insights, helping you navigate the trails with greater ease and efficiency.

Investing in a lesson or clinic can significantly enhance your mountain biking experience, making your visit to Skyline Rotorua not just thrilling but also educational. Book a lesson here.
