Things are always better when you introduce a helicopter into the mix, and the fun factor is ramped up even more when we’re dropped off in arguably one of the worlds most beautiful areas – and then we get to ride through it with absolutely no one around. After the chopper drops us into the mix, we’ll ride the purpose built single track through the alpine before dropping into pristine forest, traverse big bluffs, take on some grunty climbs and enjoy two lengthy downhill descents to the end of the trail to finish it all off. It really is the jewel in the crown of New Zealand backcountry riding.

Riding the Kaimanawa Descent, you’ll be torn between your focus on the singletrack and stopping to capture this scenery of Tongariro National Park and the Kaimanawa Ranges and beyond!
The Trail
Up to 35km long, with 450 metres of climbing, and an 1100m descent, mainly benched trail along with tight, narrow sections and some big exposure -this is the ultimate mountain biking adventure day out.

Remote, single track, with sections next to drop-offs (these are walkable), a minimum of 450m of climbing. 23km and between 2.5-4 hours of on the trail.

DURATION & DEPARTURE TIME
Trips depart at 7.30am. We’ll pick you up and drop you off at your Rotorua accommodation. 3 hour drive south to where we meet the Helicopter and fly into the Potutu tops where you start your 23km ride back to civilization.
Return to Rotorua 6.00pm

Yes – this ride is for confident intermediate to advanced riders comfortable on steep, natural trails. The trail is for intermediate riders (blue/Grade 3) and above.
Around 1,000 metres of vertical drop with varied terrain over 25km of single track, from tussock tops to native bush.
Over the 25km there is just under 450m of climbing with over 1100m of descent. The climbing is spread out over five main climbs.
Helicopter drop, guiding, lunch and riding snacks, safety briefing, and return transport from Rotorua.
Your bike, phone (camera), protective gear, water, and a backpack or bum bag (fanny pack) with space for lunch and snacks, and a rain jacket. Mountain weather changes fast so it is best to have an extra layer.
Yes, you can choose to bring an electric mountain bike.
Flights are weather-dependent. If it’s unsafe to fly, we’ll reschedule or refund.
Each flight takes a total of 6 people. Broken down into a group of 5 riders and bikes plus the pilot. This is 4 riders plus one guide and one pilot.
