This is a chance to experience the North Islands greatest landscapes on easy trails without having to bust your butt.
DAY 1 Arrive Rotorua
Arrive Rotorua, Ride Whakarewarewa Forest
Our trip begins in Rotorua – the capital of mountain biking in New Zealand. That’s our very biased local opinion, but you’ll see what we mean when we head into “the Redwoods”, as there’s a trail to suit anyone, and no mountain biking trip to New Zealand is complete without descending into the world famous Redwoods! We’ll hit a couple of smooth trails through the tree ferns today before heading back to our lakeside accommodation for a welcome dinner prepared by your guides.
ACCOMMODATION: Okere Falls Lake House RIDE TIME: 3 hours DISTANCE: Up to you GRADE: 2 Easy MEALS: (L,D)
DAY 2 Great Lake Trail
Ride the Great Lake Trail, Lake Taupo
We’ll make our way south this morning, and ride a section of the “Great Lake Trail” that skirts the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake. With incredible wide expansive views out across Lake Taupo from a wide, gradually descending trail, the ever present dose of glorious New Zealand forest, and the opportunity to swim in Lake Taupo’s beautiful waters at the end of the ride make this trail an absolute winner in any bikers book. Did we mention the views!? After our ride, we’ll head to National Park village, at the foot of the Mt Ruapehu.
ACCOMODATION: National Park Lodge RIDE TIME: 2 hours DISTANCE: 8 km GRADE: 2 Easy CLIMB: 130 metres DESCENT: 150 metres MEALS: (B,L,D)
DAY 3 Ride Old Coach Rd and Walk Tongariro National Park
Ride Old Coach Rd & Walk Tongariro National Park
This morning we’ll drive a short distance to the beginning of the “Old Coach Road” trail – the original rail link road for horse and cart transport built in 1906 to link two sections of railway that hadn’t been built through the densely forested terrain. By 1909, the rail link had been built, and the trail was left waiting for another 101 years before it’s magic was discovered for
biking. Largely flat and wide, this fantastic ride heads through huge stands of native forest. A highlight is heading over the spectacular Hapuawhenua viaduct, high above a ravine, affording great views of the surrounding native forest. We’ll end our ride in our at tonight’s accommodation in Ohakune, the North Islands premier ski town at the foot of Mt Ruapehu. For those who are keen, there’s an opportunity later this afternoon to hike a densely forested trail higher up on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The mossy character of this forest is quiet and almost spooky!
ACCOMMODATION: Ohakune Lodge RIDE TIME: 2.5 hours DISTANCE: 15 km GRADE: 2 EASY CLIMB: 130 metres DESCENT: 150 metres MEALS: (B,L,D)
DAY 4 Ride the Tongariro River Trail
Ride the Tongariro River Trail
We’ll head back through the forests that cover the western slopes of Mt Ruapehu and the other volcanic cones of Tongariro National Park, and drive a short distance to the eastern side where we’ll begin our ride on the Tongariro River Trail. This easy loop trail flanks the sides of the Tongariro River, a spectacular crystal clear river with stunning forest on each side. There’s only one very short climb on the wide, well graded trail, and the views of the river mouth and Lake Taupo from the highest point are amazing. This river is one of the most renowned trout fishing rivers in the world, so we’ll make a quick stop at the National Trout Centre on the trail, before finishing up and heading back north to Rotorua.
ACCOMMODATION: Okere Falls House RIDE TIME: 2.5 hours –DISTANCE: 15 km GRADE: 2 EASY CLIMB: 210 metres DESCENT: 210 metres MEALS: (B,L,D)
