New Zealand is full of amazing mountain biking. But I think that there is not a mountain biker out there who has finished a trail and taken a mental note, never to do that particular trail again. And we have definitely all finished a trail with that ear to ear grin on our face, wanting to go straight back to the top to do it all over again it was so fun! So how do you filter out the good from the not so desirable? There are a bunch of different ways to do this. The longer you ride, the better (hopefully) you will get at this. Here are my top 5 tips on how to find your next favourite trail!
Most of us started riding because we heard that it was super fun, some for fitness, and others may have just found themselves off the beaten path on some single track and just never stopped following it. When you get talking with other riders, watching videos, and looking at maps, you can begin to get the vibe of an areas reputation for good riding or not. If there is a place that you keep hearing mentioned for it’s great riding, like Rotorua, then eventually, you will hope to get there and see what all of the fuss is about
So you know where you want to go, now you might want some people to ride with. You might be super picky on this because some might be too fit, too fast, too crazy, or too lazy. When you find a good riding buddy, IT”S ON!!
Now you get on the internet to do some research, find were you can get access, what the weather is like, what trails suit your ability, and how to get to them all. This is where you either find too much information, or not enough. I have made it my personal goal to try and film all of my favourite trails in Rotorua so that people can see the trail being ridden to see if it is their cup of tea or not. I have also linked these to Trail Forks for each specific trail.
Guiding companies and local bike shops
If you want to take the hassle out of it all and you have limited time, getting in with a local guiding company is the way to do it! I have travelled a lot with my bike and have been to places that sound amazing when you research them, but when you get there it can be super confusing trying to find the good trails. The best experiences were when riding with mates at their local trail networks or with a guide.

Another great thing about meeting up with a local guide is you get really good recommendations on not only the best spots to ride for your ability, but all of the best spots to swim, eat, get some side adventures, and relax.
