Essential Maintenance Tips for Your New Zealand Mountain Bike Adventures

Mountain biking in New Zealand offers unparalleled opportunities to explore stunning landscapes and tackle thrilling trails. To ensure your bike performs at its best and remains reliable during your adventures, regular maintenance is crucial. In this blog post, we’ll discuss three key points for maintaining your mountain bike, allowing you to enjoy your New Zealand mountain biking experience to the fullest.

Clean and Inspect Your Bike Regularly! This is the easiest and cheapest thing you can do. After each ride, make it a habit to clean your mountain bike thoroughly and give it a quick lube. Just like in the above video. Use a gentle detergent with water if you need to remove mud or just let it dry and use a soft dry brush to remove dirt, dust, and grime from all parts of the bike. Pay special attention to the drivetrain (chain, cassette, and chainrings), suspension components, and brake callipers. Be careful not to flick anything greasy or oily on your brakes. Once cleaned, inspect your bike for any signs of damage or wear, such as cracks, loose bolts, or frayed cables. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage and ensure your bike’s longevity.
Maintain and Lubricate the Drivetrain – ALWAYS: The drivetrain is the heart of your mountain bike, and keeping it properly maintained is essential for smooth and efficient riding. Regularly clean and lubricate the chain using a bike-specific lubricant, following the manufacturer’s instructions. This helps prevent rust and corrosion and ensures optimal shifting performance. Additionally, regularly inspect the cassette and chainrings for wear and replace them if necessary. A well-maintained drivetrain will enhance your pedaling efficiency and prolong the life of your components. Not to mention keep your bike as quiet as possible!
Keeping that suspension plush! Proper maintenance of your fork and shock is crucial for the optimal performance of your bike. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for suspension maintenance, including regular cleaning, lubrication, and air pressure checks. Inspect the seals and stanchions for any signs of damage or leakage, and have them serviced by a professional if needed. There should be no “sticky points” in the stroke as you lean into your suspension at a standstill. I get a basic service every 6 months but recommended would be at least every 6-12 months depending on how often you ride. In Rotorua, we use the Suspension Lab, but specialist suspension centres are popping up all over the show! Most bike shops will also do a good job. Maintaining your suspension components will ensure a smoother ride, better traction, and enhanced control on the trails. It’s nice when your bike is running optimally always!
Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget the Tires! Maintaining proper tire pressure and regularly inspecting your tires is often overlooked but is vital for an enjoyable and safe mountain biking experience. Check your tire pressure before each ride using a reliable pressure gauge, or your thumb. It just needs to be consistent and adjust it based on the trail conditions and your riding preferences. Inspect the tire tread for any cuts where sealant may be leaking, punctures, or excessive wear, and replace the tires as needed. Well-maintained tires provide better grip, traction, and control, allowing you to tackle the diverse terrain of New Zealand’s mountain biking trails with confidence. A good tire pressure will depend on your weight and riding style. In Rotorua, I run roughly 20psi in the front and 22psi in the rear. I weigh 75-80kg depending on what I carry with me.
