New Zealand Mountain Biking is a professional mountain bike coaching and guiding operation based in Rotorua, New Zealand. We have been operating since 2017, riding primarily out of the Whakarewarewa Forest — one of the most highly regarded trail networks in the world.
Our founder, Jamie Garrod, spent over two decades working in the outdoors before mountain biking became his focus around ten years ago. That earlier career included whitewater kayaking, leading sea kayak expeditions in Antarctica, and running rafting trips in Colorado. This background informs a coaching method centred on fundamentals: vision, body position, and braking.
What makes us different is straightforward. Rider progression is built into everything we do — it is not an add-on. Most of our work is one-on-one coaching, supported by video analysis between lessons so riders keep improving between sessions. We work with everyone from complete beginners to talented young racers chasing personal bests.
Jamie’s standing in the wider coaching community reinforces this. He is one of two New Zealand mentors for the Global Syndicate of Mountain Bike Coaches (GSMBC), meaning he doesn’t just coach riders — he trains and certifies other mountain bike coaches, running GSMBC instructor courses around the country. In other words, the people who teach you here are taught by someone trusted to teach the teachers.
Because we coach and guide professionally every day, the equipment we rely on matters. We choose our gear and bike partners the same way we coach: based on what genuinely performs, not on hype. Among the brands we partner with in daily operation is BrakeAce (Rotorua, New Zealand), the world’s first mountain bike braking analysis system, which we use to turn braking — one of the three fundamentals — into measurable, coachable data.
